PROCESS OF THE PARTICIPATORY ACTION IN BRATISLAVA: URBAN WALK IN THE ZEMNÍK AREA

4. Implementing the participatory process: urban walk

An invitation to attend the urban walk was posted at the webpage of the city of Bratislava (Figure 4) and disseminated through the social web (Figure 5). The news was disseminated with the help of local media, mainly in the on-line editions of local newspapers.

The walk started in the only available access point: a parking lot situated near buffers under the river boundary bank. The asphalted path along the bank is used by cyclists and it is part of a bike path connecting three countries, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. The length of the urban walk was approximately 1.5 km (Figure 6). The route passed through the alluvial forest of Danube river, then across the river deviation near Bratislava’s district of Jarovce and finally along the Zemník’s bank.

OIKONET COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION WORKSHOP IN SKOPJE

Day 2 of the workshop – Friday, October 16, 2015

Second day of the workshop was dedicated to visiting the site of interest – Municipality of Ilinden. The visit was organized in two parts.

First part was a meeting with the representatives of the Municipality followed by the presentation by Prof. Zinoski and representative from the urban planning department. The meeting and presentations were hosted by the Mayor of the Municipality and was held in the building of Municipality of Ilinden exhibiting a profound interest of the local administration for the strategies and tools for involvement of residents into the development of the local community.

The representative of the urban planning department of the Municipality Ilinden presented a new urban plan for the Municipality and the plans for further development of the local community. Prof. Zinoski presented the workshop and the work done in the previous activities of the community participation work within the OIKONET framework at Faculty of Architecture in Skopje. Student have been able to ask and debate with their colleagues form the Municipality about the issues of interest and especially focusing on the concepts of future development of the local community and the involvement of the residents in the decision making.

Second part of the visit was dedicated to a direct contact and research at the site of the local community. Students interacted with the local residents querying the topics and elements of their investigation within the methodology and tools defined during the workshop session of the previous day. The results of the visit were beyond any expectation and the local residents although quite reserved and careful at the beginning seemed to be eventually very excited and eager to cooperate and work together with the students. The issues that were most interesting are the ones that have been questioning the way of transformation from a rural or semi-rural community into semi-urban or rurban community with some strong urban elements.

PARTICIPATION AS AN INSTRUMENT TO REDUCE FRAGMENTATION | LA PARTECIPAZIONE COME STRUMENTO PER CONNETTERE

Proposal for a participation action in Rimini:

The Architect Board of Rimini and Heriscape think that the best way to start to define strategies to address the problems of people to access Social Housing is to start a research on housing in the city of Rimini.

The work group decide to develop this research by designing a participatory process, helpful and fundamental to collect needs and to link all the actors working on Social Housing.

SOCIAL HOUSING IN RIMINI | L'HOUSING SOCIALE A RIMINI

Why talking about Social Housing in Rimini?

Heriscape, association of Bologna, and the Architect Board of Rimini, in the field of OIKONET project, propose to find a way to define needs and opportunities concerning Social Housing in a medium size city like Rimini.

Rimini is considered a good case study to reflect on some issues:

1. The financial and economic crisis and the change in the society causes a transformation of housing demand. The traditional instruments for Public Housing do not provide adequate responses to the new "atypical" housing demand. Is it possible to define the target?

2. Even if the social housing issue is characterized by the presence of many institutions, public and private, that operate at different levels addressing distinguished needs and targets, they often act without a deep coordination and cooperation necessary to identify demand, define roles and share a common policy to provide effective answers. How could it be possible to reduce this fragmentation?

E' possible definire e mappare i nuovi bisogni?

CREATING A DESIGN BRIEF / DEFINIR EL PROGRAMA DE NECESIDADES

As the final output of the participatory process, students produced a brief to guide the design of the future dwelling in the building to be refurbished. The objective of this task was to describe an architectural program and to produce design guidelines based on the information obtained from the dwellers. These design guidelines were the result of processing the information received from the dwellers that were summarized under a theme.

Some of the themes provided by students using the previous template were:
  • Natural light: “Natural light, large windows and beautiful views were often mentioned”
  • Community: “Almost all of the participants mentioned that they wanted share their life with the community, not only rooms but also activities”
  • Green housing: “Many dwellers would like to have green spaces in their houses. Some of them suggested to have a place to plant fruits and vegetables”
  • Children development: “Families with children stressed that it would be important for them to have a special place for their children to play outside their apartments. This place would have different functions, for example: a place to draw and paint, to play with other kids and to do outdoor activities.”
  • Productive space: “Many dwellers mentioned that they would like to have in their apartment a place of their own, to work or study, do their hobbies, to relax and listen to some music, to read”.
